One line, 11 stations — and expansion plans
The Almaty metro is a single line with 11 stations, about 14 km long. It opened on 1 December 2011 (Raiymbek Batyr – Alatau); Sairan and Moskva were added in 2015, and in 2022 the line was extended to Saryarka and Baurzhan Momyshuly. The city plans to extend the line further west toward Kalkaman. Fares are paid with the Onay card — 120 tenge per ride.
The Almaty metro at a glance
The Almaty metro opened on 1 December 2011 and became the first metro in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. Today the network is a single line — Line 1 — with 11 stations. It is operated by Almaty Metro (KGP «Metropoliten»), and the network is developed by Almaty City Administration.
Line 1 runs from the north-east to the south-west of the city — from Raiymbek Batyr near Raiymbek Avenue to Baurzhan Momyshuly in the western part of Almaty. The line is about 14 km long, and an end-to-end trip takes about 24 minutes. The track gauge is 1520 mm and the contact-line voltage is 750 V DC. The line runs Hyundai Rotem trains.
The Almaty metro has just one line and no interchanges, so it is impossible to get lost: you only need to choose the right direction. Fares are paid with the Onay transport card — 120 tenge per ride. The metro carries around 60,000 passengers a day.

A ride on the Almaty metro costs 120 ₸ whatever the distance. The metro sells its own smart token and smart card at the ticket offices; the turnstiles also take the city-wide Onay card.
