How to pay for the Almaty metro

One ride on the Almaty metro costs 120 tenge whatever the distance. The metro sells two things of its own at the ticket offices and machines: a smart token (one ride, valid for one day) and a metro smart card (180 tenge for the card, up to 60 rides, and the rides stay valid for 3 years from the last top-up). The only concession the metro itself publishes is the child token for ages 7 to 15 at 60 tenge, on presenting a document proving the child’s age.

The turnstiles also accept the city-wide Onay card, and at the ticket office you can pay by bank card through the POS terminal. Cash is not accepted at the turnstiles — buy or top up before you go through.

You can buy an Onay card at cashiers and machines in metro stations and at «Karavan» kiosks. One card works for the metro, buses and trolleybuses of Almaty.

Fares and payment methods

Smart token
120 ₸
One ride. Sold at the ticket offices and machines in the stations. The token is valid for one day; if it expires, ask a member of staff.
Child smart token (7–15)
60 ₸
The only concession the metro itself publishes. You need a document proving the child’s age. Child tokens start at age 7, so under-7s do not need a ticket.
Metro smart card
180 ₸
The price of the card itself. Reusable: 120 ₸ per ride, up to 60 rides on the card, and the rides stay valid for 3 years from the last top-up.
Onay transport card
500 ₸
The city-wide card for all Almaty transport (420 ₸ of it is a refundable deposit). The metro accepts it at the turnstiles but does not publish its own price for an Onay ride — the city-wide fare of 120 ₸ applies.
Bank card
120 ₸
You can pay at the metro ticket office with a bank card through the POS terminal.

Fares are set by the Onay operator and the Almaty city administration. Check current prices at onay.kz and metroalmaty.kz.

Who travels free

The Almaty metro publishes exactly one concession: the child smart token at 60 tenge for children aged 7 to 15, on presenting a document proving the child’s age. Since the child token starts at seven, under-7s do not need a ticket at all.

City-wide concessions for schoolchildren, students and pensioners do exist, but their terms are set by the Onay system rather than by the metro — check onay.kz. We do not repeat them here, so as not to present as a metro rule something the metro does not publish.

  • children under 7 — the child token is only sold from age 7

Reduced fare

60 ₸

The child smart token, for children aged 7 to 15. Bought at the ticket office on presenting a document proving the child’s age. It is the only concession the metro publishes on its own site (metroalmaty.kz, «Оплата»).

Tip: keep a small balance on your Onay card — you can top it up at a cashier, at a metro machine, in the Onay app and on onay.kz. Checking the balance is easy in the app and on the validator when you pay.
